Kuopio Unit
The Kuopio Unit of FMI is located at the southern coast of Savilahti Gulf of Lake Kallavesi, in the 3rd floor of University of Kuopio's Melania -building . Of the nearly 20 people working in the Kuopio Unit, roughly half operate in the Aviation and Military Weather Service, and the other half in various aspects of atmospheric research.
In Atmospheric Research, our focus is on the atmospheric aerosol particles and UV radiation, as well as, their influences to human health and climate. Special research subjects are:
- interaction of fine particles and cloud droplets, as well as, cloud formation and experimental research at the Puijo tower measurement station
- climate change related studies (COSMOS), especially relating to formation, interaction, and dynamics of aerosols and clouds
- development of forecast and monitoring system for global UV radiation
- influence of atmospheric particles to the course of radiation
- collecting database for the global aerosol emissions
- biosphere-atmosphere interactions, especially relating to fine particles
- general aerosol model development relating to aforementioned research subjects
- remote sensing of aerosols, both with satellites and from the ground (e.g. sunphotometers)
We have an important role in the Kuopio Centre for Aerosol Research (KCAR), which has been built up together with the organisations devoted to health, environment, and wellbeing, around the University of Kuopio centre. The strength of KCAR is the close co-operation and shared laboratory facilities with the Physics and Environmental Research Groups of the University of Kuopio and close collaboration with the Environmental Health Department of the National Public Health Institute (KTL).
Aviation and Military Weather Service is responsible for the weather services of air traffic and air forces in the Eastern Finland. Most important clients are:
- Karelia Air Command, Kuopio
- Utti Helicopter Battalion
- Airports at Kuopio, Utti, Mikkeli, and Jyväskylä
- Eastern Command
- Air Warfare School, Tikkakoski
In addition, weather service gives telephone service, climate service, and on winter pedestrian and road condition warnings for public. We cooperate also on research and product development with other units of FMI in following areas:
- pedestrian warning models
- workstation for meteorologists
- icing forecasting
- monthly weather reports
- aviation weather service
