Climate change

The climate change studies at the Finnish Meteorological Institute can be divided under following headings.

Climate scenarios for Finland

Projections of future climatic changes in Finland have both scientific and policy importance. Projections are used for assessing the likely consequences for ecosystems, for economic activities like transportation (see below) energy production, and forestry and for human health. Projections are also valuable for policy makers and the general public.

Greenhouse gas balance studies

The aim of the research is to improve our understanding of the magnitude, location, temporal behaviour and causes of the carbon source/sink strenghts of terrestrial ecosystems.

Climate change impact studies

We have studied the influence of climate change on the Baltic sea cover, on soil frost and on the dam safety.
