Radar-based Nowcasting
In the shortest timescale of 0-2 hours, extrapolation of the current weather is still the standard approach. The operational solution at FMI applies modified autocorrelation-based atmospheric motion vector (AMV) algorithm from EUMETSAT. PseudoCAPPI reflectivity composites with interval of 5 minutes are used as the input for the AMV system. Speed and direction inaccuracies along the trajectories are used to estimate location errors which works as the basis for an physically relevant smoothing.

Research in this area is made in comparing different algorithms like optical flow and wavelet methods to the autocorrelation.

FMI is also testing the possibilities of The Local Analysis and Prediction System (LAPS) which integrates data from virtually every meteorological observation system into a very high-resolution gridded framework. This could be the basis for somewhat longer nowcasts. See http://laps.fsl.noaa.gov/
